Beyond the Fairways

Here’s to your
   golfing heritage

Drummond Club Members looking for high quality play ‘n’ stay within Australia could do no better than visit The Heritage Golf and Country Club in Victoria. Host of the 2012 Drummond Club National Event Series final later this year, The Heritage has a special offer for Drummond Club members – for just $299, two people can enjoy a round of

golf on one of Australia’s finest private courses with an overnight stay in the Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley with its world class amenities.

The Heritage is home to two outstanding golf courses. The Jack Nicklaus-designed St John Course, opened in 2000, is the first private Jack Nicklaus

Signature Course to be built in Australia. The stamp of Nicklaus, arguably the game’s greatest ever golfer and now one of the world’s premier course designers, is all over the St John.

The parkland style par-72 championship course challenges at every turn as it meanders through the picturesque Yarra Valley, taking advantage of natural undulations. St John provides a test of golf for all skill levels with water hazards, strategically placed slopes and mounds and impeccable greens flanked by artfully conceived bunkers complementing the unpredictable contours of its generous fairways.

A highlight is the Quarry Hole, the par-3 11th with water down the

right hand side and quarry rock face skirting the left side of the hole. Par here is a good score.

Stroll over the bridge and across the Yarra River to discover The Henley – a traditional links course designed by Tony Cashmore in consultation with Nicklaus Design. Under Cashmore, designer of links

courses The Dunes and 13th Beach, The Henley is more rugged than St John, much of it set through wetlands with challenging bunkers, both fierce and deep.

At 6353 metres and par 72, The Henley offers a tough examination. Strategic golf is the order of the day here.

The Heritage clubhouse has stunning views over the St John course and features a Members Lounge, superb dining facilities and bars, and an excellent pro shop. Linked by a covered walkway with cascading water features is the magnificent Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley.

The hotel features 96 spacious and superbly appointed guest rooms and 6 suites, all with balconies or outdoor terraces. Guests have access to the array of Heritage facilities and activities on offer to satisfy both golf and non-golfing interests.

For wine enthusiasts, the famed Yarra Valley is the historical home of the Victorian wine industry, the State's first vineyard having been planted in 1837 on what is now Yering Station.

There are over 40 wineries in the area, including Domaine Chandon, Tarrawarra, DeBortoli, Coldstream Hills and Yering Station to name a few. A wide range of grape varieties is grown but it is chardonnay and pinot noir for which the region has received the highest accolades.

Any of these superb local wines would make the perfect accompaniment to chef Marc Brown's modern Australian menus
