Rory McIlroy leaves European tour to re-join US PGA

Reigning US Open champion Rory McIlroy says he is favouring a return to the US PGA tour, citing a preference for the warmer weather and more comfortable playing conditions compared to the wind-affected European courses.

Speaking to reporters yesterday (August 3), the world number four announced his intention to play a "full schedule" in America next year as well as a desire to base his long-term future in the country of his only Major victory to date.

"I feel as if I play my best golf over here. I am very comfortable in this country and I am going to look at a few houses in Florida," McIlroy said prior to the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

"I've thought about it and feel my game really suits playing courses over here," he added.

"You have your favourite events and most of my favourite events seem to be on this side of the pond."

It represents quite a turnaround for the Northern Irishman, who at the end of 2010 gave up his US tour membership after only one year. At the time he cited fatigue from the gruelling schedule and there was little indication he would reverse the decision so quickly.
