New Zealand is in a strong position after day one of the Asian World Cup of Golf qualifying tournament in Malaysia.

The team of Mike Hendry and Gareth Paddison ended the fourballs component of the event in third place, carding a six-under 65 to sit two shots back from current leaders Singapore. The host country lies in second place after scoring 64.

The New Zealanders' round contained back-to-back eagles at holes five and six, but couldn't maintain the hot streak as their scoring plateaued over the back nine.

"Gareth played very well and I kind of hanged in there,'' said Hendry.

"Overall we combined well and that's what you are supposed to do in this format. We have to step up in tomorrow's [foursomes] format.''

16 teams are contesting the tournament, with the top three qualifying for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup to be held this November in China.

The Singaporean pair of Mardan Mamat and Lam Chih Bing was highly impressive in putting together a round of 63 including eight birdies and no bogeys.

Aiming to make their fifth world cup appearance together, Mardan said: "When Lam is having a bad hole I come in to save the hole and vice versa."
