Australians Adam Scott and Jason Day have continued their respective strong years, with the pair currently sitting first and second on the Bridgestone Invitational leaderboard after round one.
Scott put together a precise, bogey-free round 62 to be eight under the card and the outright leader, just one shot away from equalling the course record at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
He took charge of the World Golf Championship event on the back nine, where a hat-trick of birdies from the 13th to the 15th set up his formidable position heading into Friday's play.
Just one shot further back at seven under was compatriot Day, who tied with Scott as runner-up of the US Masters in April. He also avoided shooting a single bogey in a scintillating round.
Scott and Day will be hoping to take this type of form into the weekend, where they would play alongside each other if able to maintain their current top-two standings.
Nick Watney is outright third at five under, with a host of players ready to strike at four under the card.
Meanwhile, the returning Tiger Woods drew plenty of attention on his way to a two-under 68.
