Subplots abound at this week's PGA Championship

This week's PGA Championship promises to be an intriguing battle between former world number ones, current top-ranked players yet to win a Major and some of the hottest golfers on the tour.

While a large percentage of eyes are bound to be on Tigers Woods and the next phase of his comeback from a three-month injury break, there is an added twist making this storyline even more fascinating.

Woods will be fighting hard to regain some of his former glory on a grand stage, but he will be doing it without sacked former caddie Steve Williams, who teamed up with Australian Adam Scott to win the WGC Bridgestone Invitational last week and will carry his bag again at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Philadelphia.

But this is only one of the many notable subplots to the year's final Major.

Can an American break the lean spell for his country and win on home turf? The three biggest tournaments of the year have been won by a South African and two Northern Irishmen.

Meanwhile the world's two best players, according to the official rankings list are Englishmen Lee Westwood and Luke Donald - neither of whom has won a Major title. Will this be the week one of them elevates to a new status in the game?
