Adam Scott storms into world top ten

Adam Scott's superb year has continued with his surge back into the top ten of the official world golf rankings, updated on Sunday (August 7).

The Australian lifted eight places up the list - from 17th to ninth - after his commanding victory at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio last week.

Although rankings do not always tell the full story of a player's up-to-date standing in the game - or in some cases ability to win Majors - Scott's sharp ascent clearly reflects his re-built reputation and the threat he poses to the world's best players in important tournaments.

In 2007 he reached his highest career ranking of third in the world.

The 31-year-old is yet to win a Major title, but will enter this week's US PGA Championship as one of the favourites given his recent form and his tied runner-up finish at the US Masters in April.

"To win a World Golf Championship is what I set out to do this year. Along with the majors, I have had a real focus on the big events and I think I've done a pretty good job so far of getting myself in the hunt," Scott said of his victory at the Firestone Country Club.

Compatriot Jason Day also moved up another position to a career-high seventh.
