Paul Lawrie will enter the final round of the shortened Commercialbank Qatar Masters in Doha on Sunday (February 5) with a one-stroke lead over Nicolas Colsaerts. Lawrie won the tournament in 1999 and 13 years later has the chance to win an event reduced to 54 holes after strong winds caused major interruptions. The Scotsman made a five-under 67 in the second round that featured just one bogey, to reach eight under overall with 18 holes remaining. Remarkably Lawrie incurred a one stroke penalty for dropping his ball on his marker on the tenth green - the second week in a row he has made the extremely rare error. Colsaerts put together an impressive 68 to be seven under and ideally placed to pressure the leader on the final day. Swede Peter Hanson and Ricardo Gonzalez of Argentina share third place at six under after rounds of 69 and 67 respectively, while Australian Jason Day is still in contention at four under. Day made an even-par 72 to follow his 68 on the opening day, but the 24-year-old will need to do better than the two birdies he managed in round two. Defending champion Thomas Bjorn struck the round of the day with a 65, but having made a disastrous 79 in the first round he is well back in a share of 52nd. |
