Christel Boeljon wins exciting Australian Ladies Masters

In a dramatic conclusion to the RACV Australian Ladies Masters yesterday (February 5), Christel Boeljon held her nerve under pressure to clinch the title with her final putt of the tournament.

From just over a metre the Dutchwoman rolled in her birdie putt at the 18th hole at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast, taking her past So Yeon Ryu who earlier looked the likely winner.

But the Korean fired her second shot at the final hole into the greenside bunker, emerging with a par when every other player in the top ten made birdie.

Ryu's closing even-par 72 was a far cry from her dominant 11-under 61 in the second round - a performance that at the time appeared to put the US Open champion in control of the event.

However, Boeljon's consistency over the four days proved the difference, with rounds of 66, 65, 68 and 68 taking her to 21 under. She teed off Sunday morning three strokes behind playing partner Ryu.

For just under ten minutes, four players could not be separated at 20 under and a playoff seemed a distinct possibility. Italian Diana Luna and Korean Ha-Nuel Kim both made 67 to fall one stroke short, sharing second place with Ryu.

At her last three Masters appearances the 24-year-old Boeljon missed the cut, making the victory this time around even sweeter.

"Golf is crazy sometimes," was Boeljon's reaction to the remarkable closing stages.
