Jbe Kruger wins maiden title at Avantha Masters

Jbe Kruger has survived a nervy finish to claim his maiden title at the Avantha Masters in New Delhi, India yesterday (February 19), regaining his composure at the vital moment to seal a memorable win.

The South African appeared to be cruising to victory during the final round, before briefly losing his way in the closing stages.

At the 17th tee the 25-year-old held a three-stroke lead, but recorded his first bogey in 46 holes of precise and consistent golf.

Two wayward shots to begin the 18th hole put his lead in danger, but Kruger rallied to drop a difficult approach shot on the green and make par.

"I'm very relieved to win for the first time," Kruger said.

"I felt that victory was inevitable when I got to the 14th hole. I knew that I had a good chance as I had a comfortable three-shot cushion then."

With a round of three-under 69, Kruger reached 14 under the card overall and won the tournament by two strokes from Jorge Campillo and Marcel Siem.

The joint runners-up compiled fourth rounds of 67 and 70 respectively.

Australian Marcus Fraser enjoyed a fine week and finished in a share of fourth place at 11 under after a round of 70.
