Troy Matteson has maintained his lead at the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Illinois and appears to be the likely winner unless one of his challengers can make a significant move on Sunday (local time).

Matteson fired a five-under 66 in the third round to reach 18 under the card overall, establishing a three-stroke lead in the process.

The 32-year-old made two bogeys on the back nine, but seven birdies throughout the day helped him to a solid score.

While declaring he would "always" prefer to be in front, Matteson said the lead will not alter his approach to the final 18 holes.

"I think you still need to be aggressive," he told reporters.

"It's anybody's tournament."

Steve Stricker sits in outright second position at 15 under following a round of 66 - and could pose a serious threat to Matteson's title aspirations.

Zach Johnson and Brian Harman share third position at 14 under after rounds of 66 and 69 respectively.

Australian John Senden remains in contention, with his four-under 67 taking him to 13 under the card and equal fifth alongside Billy Hurley III and JJ Henry.

Stuart Appleby fired a 67 in a third round featuring six birdies. At 11 under Appleby will attempt to improve his position inside the top ten.
