Cam Davis Wins His Second PGA TOUR Title In Detroit
Australia’s Cam Davis returned to the winner’s circle at the Rocket Mortgage Classic staged at Detroit Golf Club. It was the 29-year-old’s first win on the PGA TOUR in three years. Davis won the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic in a playoff for his maiden PGA TOUR victory.
Davis, from Sydney, carded a final round 2-under 70 to reach 18-under. The round included a birdie at the 17th hole to match American Akshay Bhatia in the lead. Davis made a clutch up-and-down at the 72nd hole to finish regulation play co-leader with Bhatia. He then had to wait to see what the talented American would do up the last hole!
Bhatia had 32-foot putt for birdie at the last hole to claim the title outright. He then missed his four-foot par putt to force a playoff. The error was his first three-putt all week and his first miss from inside six feet during the four days.
With the win, Davis produced his first top-10 on the PGA TOUR season and best result in 2024 since managing a T12 at The Masters.
Bhatia, aged 22, was looking to add his name to Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Tom Kim and Sergio Garcia as players who collected three PGA TOUR titles before the age of 23. He closed with an even par round of 72.
With his bogey at the 72nd hole, Bhatia fell back to a four-way tie for second place at 17-under with compatriot Davis Thompson (68), England’s Aaron Rai (72) and Australia’s Min Woo Lee (69). It was Lee’s second runner up on the PGA TOUR.
The PGA TOUR moves to Illinois for next week’s John Deere Classic to be staged at TPC Deere Run. Austria’s Sepp Straka is the defending champion.
