Cameron Smith Wins Greg Norman Medal
Cameron Smith has earned another significant title after claiming the 2020 Greg Norman Medal.
The 27-year-old from Brisbane is the latest local golfer to win the prestigious award, which is presented to Australia’s best male or female Tour Professional on the international stage each year.
Smith enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2020, capturing his maiden individual PGA Tour title in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii. The gritty Aussie overcame America’s Brendan Steele in a playoff.
He then bookended the COVID-19 interrupted year with his career best performance at a major championship in November. Smith finished in a tie for second place behind Dustin Johnson at The Masters. With rounds of 67, 68, 69 and 69 at Augusta National, Smith became the first golfer in Masters history to shoot all four rounds in the 60's.
Like many Australian golfers, Smith’s career has been inspired by Greg Norman. “That’s who we basically grew up watching. So, at the time I thought that as the biggest tournament in the world,” Smith said referring to winning the 2010 Greg Norman Junior Masters.
From that win, Smith went on the claim victories at the 2011 Australian Boys Amateur, 2011 Australian Amateur Stroke Pay and the 2013 Australian Amateur.
Smith turned professional in 2013 and owns four professional wins including the 2017 and 2018 Australian PGA Championships.
Norman revealed the 2020 Greg Norman Medal winner via a video call to Smith’s laptop. “It was pretty surprising. I was obviously in a bit of shock because I didn’t really know what was going on,” Smith said of his video call with the Australian golf icon.
