Davis Thompson Scores Breakthrough PGA TOUR Win At The John Deere Classic
Davis Thompson is a PGA TOUR winner! The 25-year-old American claimed his maiden PGA TOUR victory at the John Deere Classic by a comfortable four shots. The former world No. 1 amateur golfer joined the PGA TOUR last season. His breakthrough win in Illinois comes at his 63rd PGA TOUR start. Thompson owns three runner up finishes including at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic won by Australia’s Cam Davis.
Thompson carded rounds of 63, 67, 62 and 64 to set the new tournament scoring record at TPC Deere Run at 28-under. He banks US$1.44 million in prize money and receives a two-year PGA TOUR exemption including entry into next year’s Masters at Augusta.
Three players, Michael Thorbjornsen, Luke Clanton and CT Pan, took a share of second place at 24-under. Thorbjornsen, aged 22, turned professional in June this year after finishing at the top of the PGA TOUR University rankings for 2024. The 2018 US Junior Amateur champion fired an 8-under 63 on Sunday. Fellow American Clanton also produced a final round 8-under 63. The 20-year-old amateur was making his third PGA TOUR start. Clanton finished T10 at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. Taiwan’s Pan posted a 7-under 64. The 32-year-old was searching for his second PGA TOUR title after winning the 2019 RBC Heritage.
Thompson and Pan punched the two tickets on offer to this year’s Open Championship to be staged at Royal Troon in two weeks.
Americans Ben Griffin and Carson Young finished in a tie for fifth place at 23-under. Griffin fired the low round of Sunday with a superb 9-under 62. Young, aged 29, put together a round of 8-under 63.
Hayden Springer produced the 14th sub-60 round in PGA TOUR history with his sizzling 12-under 59 on Thursday. The 27-year-old American needed just 27 shots to complete his opening nine holes before coming home in 4-under 32 with an eagle-birdie finish to secure the historic feat. Springer’s bogey-free round included two eagles and eight birdies.
Jason Day was the best of the two Aussies in the field. The 36-year-old put together all four rounds in the 60s to finish at 16-under and in a tie for 23rd place. Harrison Endycott missed the cut.
The PGA TOUR moves to Scotland for the Genesis Scottish Open to be staged at The Renaissance Club. Rory McIlroy is the defending champion.
