Finau Wins 3M Open

Tony Finau produced a stunning come-from-behind victory to claim the 3M Open by three shots. The 32-year-old American was five shots behind the leader Scott Piercy standing on the 8th tee. After a dramatic turnaround, Finau could even afford a bogey at the last hole to secure his comfortable winning margin. Korea’s Sungjae Im and Argentine’s Emiliano Grillo took a share of second place. Piercy and fellow Americans James Hahn and Tom Hoge finished in a tie for fourth place.

Finau scored his third PGA Tour title and second victory inside 12 months after reaching 17-under at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota. The popular PGA Tour figure was the only player in the field to post all four rounds in the 60s. Finau carded rounds of 67, 68, 65 and 67. His superb final round included a hat-trick of birdies at the 14th, 15th and 16th holes to bolt him into the lead. The victory almost certainly assures the world No. 17 will earn an automatic selection for a spot in the US Team at this year’s Presidents Cup.

Im and Grillo ended the event at 14-under. Im signed for a final round 3-under. Grillo was unable to advance his overnight tally with an even par round.

Hahn produced the best round of the day to move 12 places up the leaderboard on Sunday. The 40-year-old fired a 6-under 65 that included picking up five shots in a five-hole stretch from the 12th. He finished at 13-under for the event with Hoge and Piercy. Hoge, aged 33, was looking for his second win of the season after claiming the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am in February. He scored a 1-under 71 final round. Piercy, aged 43, was hoping for his first win in four years. The Tour veteran was on track for victory after he got to 20-under for the event and a five-shot lead with his second birdie for the round at the 6th hole. Piercy’s bid for his fifth PGA Tour title started to unravel with back-to-back bogeys to end his front nine. Things got worse on the run home. Piercy dropped five shots over the first six holes on the back nine to fall out of contention. The devastating stretch included a triple bogey at the 14th hole.

Cam Davis was the best placed Australian. The 27-year-old from Sydney produced four steady rounds to reach 7-under to finish in a tie for 17th place. Davis, who will defend his maiden PGA Tour win next week in Detroit, closed with a 2-under 69 on Sunday.

The PGA Tour moves to Michigan for next week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic staged at Detroit Golf Club. Australia’s Cam Davis is the defending champion.
