Griffin Holds Commanding 36-Hole Lead at The Heritage Classic
Matthew Griffin takes a five-shot lead into the weekend at the Heritage Classic in the Yarra Valley. The 40-year-old Victorian produced a superb 7-under 65 on Friday to move to 18-under at the halfway mark. The Drummond Golf Ambassador scored a course record 11-under 61 on Thursday. The incredible bogey-free 36-hole tally includes 18 birdies and 18 pars.
Griffin started his second round at the 10th tee and carded two birdies on the back nine. The 2014 Victorian Open champion picked up another shot at the 2nd hole and then completed the front nine with a string of four consecutive birdies. Speaking with the media after the round Griffin said, "Starting after having such a low round is traditionally hard. I felt the pins were a little bit tougher today, and whereas yesterday on the back nine I holed everything I looked at, today I had a run of holes there where I didn't hole a putt. I kind of knew that you're going to have to be something in the twenties (under par) to probably win. Today was just about trying to shoot as low a number as I can to, I guess get me close to that number that I want to be at over the weekend."
Griffin, who is in search of his first PGA Tour of Australasia success since 2016, leads Joshua Greer and Jak Carter. Western Australia's Greer posted a 3-under 69 to add to his opening 10-under 62. South Australia's Carter has enjoyed rounds of 65 and 66.
Corey Lamb from New South Wales returned the low round of Friday with a 9-under 63 to move into the weekend in fourth place at 12-under. He is joined on that mark by amateur Quinnton Croker from Queensland.
