Griffin Maintains Strong Lead at The Heritage Classic Into Final Round
Matthew Griffin will take a healthy five-shot lead into Sunday at the Heritage Classic. The 40-year-old Victorian posted a steady 3-under 69 on Saturday in tough conditions on the St John Course to get to 21-under. Griffin is searching to return to the winner's circle for the first time since claiming the 2016 New Zealand Open. After the round, Griffin suggested to the media that he has his eye on another low round on Sunday, “Probably even par (tomorrow) is not good enough, so if I can make a lot of birdies I can take it out of everyone else’s hands.”
“2018 and 19 were probably my two best years, and I had a couple of chances to win in Japan but there was some really good golf that took it away from me,” Griffin said.
“Whilst I haven’t had a win, I feel like I’ve been close. I guess it’s in my hands tomorrow.”
The Drummond Golf Ambassador's nearest rival is South Australia's Jak Carter, who matched Griffin with a 3-under 69 on Saturday. Carter is hoping for his first Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia title.
The next chaser is amateur Quinnton Croker from Queensland, who sits seven shots from the lead at 14-under after carding a third round 2-under 70.
