Grillo Wins Playoff To Take The Charles Schwab Challenge
Emiliano Grillo birdied the second playoff hole to win the Charles Schwab Challenge. The 30-year-old from Argentina overcame America’s Adam Schenk for his second PGA Tour title.
Grillo and Schenk finished regulation play at 8-under. Both players made a par at the first playoff hole. Grillo took the title after striping his iron approach at the par 3, 16th hole to four feet from the cup. He brushed in the birdie putt for his first PGA Tour victory since the 2015 Frys.com Open.
Grillo signed for a final round 2-under 68. The 2015-16 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year got to 4-under during his final round after 16 holes and held a two-shot lead with two holes to play. The world No. 80 then made a double-bogey at the final hole to drop back to 8-under for the tournament. Grillo faced a nervous wait in the clubhouse with Schenk and England’s Harry Hall also at 8-under playing the final hole. Schenk made his par at the 72nd hole to meet Grillo in extra holes. Hall, aged 25, was in search of his maiden PGA Tour victory. He found the water hazard off the tee before tapping in for an untimely bogey at the final hole to miss the playoff.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler produced the equal lowest round on Sunday with a 3-under 67 to get to 7-under and join England’s Harry Hall in a share of third place. The stunning final round included a hole-in-one at the par 3, 8th hole where the Texan used a 7-iron to accurately cover the 189 yards to the pin. It was Scheffler’s second ace on the PGA Tour. He scored his first hole-in-one at the 2014 AT&T Byron Nelson in his PGA Tour debut as an amateur.
Defending champion America’s Sam Burns signed for a 2-under 68 on Sunday to get to 5-under and in a share of sixth place with compatriots Rickie Fowler and Michael Kim.
Victoria’s Aaron Baddeley headed the Aussie challenge. The tour veteran carded a final round 3-under 67 to move up 38 places on the leaderboard into a tie for 21st place. Min Woo Lee was playing at his first PGA Tour event since gaining a special temporary membership on that tour. The 24-year-old from Western Australia posted a final round 3-over 73 to finish at 1-over and in a tie for 40th place.
The PGA Tour moves to Ohio for next week’s the Memorial Tournament to be staged at Muirfield Village Golf Club. America’s Billy Horschel is the defending champion.
