Hatton Overcomes McIlroy to Win Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
England’s Tyrell Hatton confirmed his status as one of golf’s biggest stars after winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in emphatic style.
The 29-year-old scored a four-shot victory over Australia’s Jason Scrivener. Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy finished in outright third place.
Hatton stormed to his fourth Rolex Series title and sixth European Tour win after posting a bogey-free final round 6-under 66 to reach 18-under. Earlier, the former Ryder Cup player carded rounds of 65, 68, 71 at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. The win is the ideal start to the 2021 Race to Dubai for Hatton, who is forecasted to jump into the top five on the Official World Golf Ranking. A jubilant Hatton said, "I've always loved starting my season here in Abu Dhabi and to now add my name on that trophy with so many great champions before me is a huge honour.”
Scrivener stamped his name as one to watch in 2021. The 31-year-old fired a sizzling 29 over the closing nine holes for a final round 6-under 66. He finished in solo second place for his career best result on the European Tour and pocketed €710,175 in prize money.
McIlroy began the final round with a one shot lead over Hatton. The four-time major winner stumbled on Sunday producing a par round to finish one shot back from Scrivener and in third place.
