Lucas Hebert Claims Maiden PGA Tour Title
Australia’s Lucas Herbert scored his first win on the PGA Tour at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. In difficult playing conditions during the final round, the 25-year-old from Bendigo held off fast-finishing America’s Patrick Reed by one shot.
Herbert’s latest title comes on the back of claiming two recent wins on the European Tour—2020 Omega Dubai Desert Classic and 2021 Irish Open. He won the Irish Open with a stunning wire-to-wire performance.
Herbert entered Sunday in third place. Playing in the final group, he was four shots behind 54-hole leader Canada’s Taylor Pendrith and one shot behind New Zealand’s Danny Lee. Herbert made a quick start with birdies at holes two and three. He then reeled off five consecutive pars before making a bogey at the 9th hole to cover the front nine in 1-under. Coming home on the back nine, Herbert followed his third birdie of the round at the 12th hole with a bogey at the 13th hole. He then made an important bounce-back birdie at the 14th hole. Holding a narrow one-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard, Herbert made solid pars at the final four-hole stretch for victory.
Herbert carded rounds of 70, 65, 65 and 69 to reach 15-under at Port Royal Golf Club in Bermuda. Reed and Lee finished in joint second place at 14-under. Reed made up fifteen positions on the leaderboard on Sunday with a 6-under 65. The stunning round featured four birdies at his last six holes. Lee, who was searching for his second win on the PGA Tour, signed for an even par final round to remain at 14-under. The 2015 Greenbrier Classic winner blew his chances to return to the winner’s circle dropping four shots over a three-hole stretch early on the back nine. Lee rebounded with three closing birdies but couldn’t make up the ground already lost.
America’s Patrick Rodgers enjoyed a strong performance taking solo fourth place at 13-under. America’s Scott Stallings shared fifth place with overnight leader Pendrith at 12-under. Stallings produced the best round on the final day by a whopping three shots with an incredible bogey-free 9-under 62. Pendrith, a PGA Tour rookie, went without a birdie on Sunday managing a disappointing 5-over 76.
The PGA Tour moves to Mexico for next week’s World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba staged at El Cameleon Golf Club. Norway’s Viktor Hovland is the defending champion.
