2024 Drummond Golf Cup - South Australia Championship
Mathews & Luey Through To Drummond Golf Cup Final
On Friday October 11, Jaikob Mathews and Mia Luey made perfect use of the final 'official' day of school holidays (South Australia). Mathews, a Sports Teacher, and Luey, a 14-year-old student, topped the field at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club to win their division of the Drummond Golf Cup South Australia Championship. And, when they return to their respective schools this week, the pair can rest assured that their superb efforts on the golf course have already graduated them to a spot at the Drummond Golf Cup Final to be staged at the remarkable Peninsula-Kingswood Country Club in December this year.
Mathews, who plays off a handicap of 20, won the DGC SA State Championship with 39 stableford points. The men's division was a close affair, with 10 players finishing within three shots of victory. Mathews scored a narrow one-point victory over three players; Wayne Morgan (Tanunda Pines GC), Andrew Robinson (Westward GC) and Caleb Edgecomb (Highcombe G&CC).
Teenager Luey, who plays off a handicap of 8, collected the women's title with 34 points. It was the second consecutive year the South Australia women's championship was won by a teenager after rising junior Jaime Hards was victorious last year. Both Luey and Hards are members at Kooyonga Golf Club.
Brett Ogle, one of Australia’s most familiar and charismatic golfers, was on hand to manage the day. The Drummond Golf Ambassador also helped to raise funds for Lifeline Australia. The event more than $1,000 for Lifeline Australia.
