McIlroy Claims Wells Fargo For Record Fourth Victory. Day T4

Rory McIlroy is accustomed to setting new records in golf. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman won the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow for a record fourth time. No other golfer has won the coveted title on more than two occasions. McIlroy closed out Sunday with a superb 6-under 65 for an emphatic five-shot victory. The stunning round was the best score by the field on the final day. McIlroy now boasts 26 PGA TOUR titles. It was his second win this year after collecting the Zurich Classic two weeks ago teeming up with Shane Lowry.

McIlroy started the final round two shots behind 54-hole leader Xander Schauffele. The world No. 2 made up early ground posting a birdie at the opening hole before falling back to a two-shot deficit when Schauffele made an eagle at the par 5, 7th hole. McIlroy responded covering the final 11 holes in 6-under. The dramatic close to the round included two eagles, four birdies and a double bogey at the last hole. McIlroy posted all four rounds in the 60s with scores of 67, 68, 67 and 65 getting him to 17-under.

The result was another setback for Schauffele, who extended his winless drought to 39 events dating back to the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open. The 30-year-old Californian, who finished second last year at this event, carded an even par final round 71 to remain on 12-under. Schauffele, who was looking for his 8th PGA TOUR title, held a four-shot lead over the field after 36 holes. The two-time Ryder Cup member has recorded eight top 10s on the PGA TOUR this season including two runner ups results. It was Schauffele’s 14th PGA TOUR career second place.

Byeong Hun An took outright third place at 9-under after firing a 5-under 66 on Sunday.

Jason Day was the best-placed Australian finishing at 6-under and in a tie for fourth place with Sungjae Im. Day carded a 1-under 70 on Sunday to record his fourth top 10 this season.

The PGA TOUR moves to Kentucky for the second men’s major title of the year at the PGA Championship to be staged at Valhalla Golf Club. Brooks Koepka is the defending champion.
