the Memorial Tournament
Latest!
Defending champion Jon Rahm withdrew from the Memorial Tournament soon after he completed his third round. The 26-year-old Spaniard returned a positive test for COVID-19. The world No. 3, who was separated from the field with a massive six shot lead, is now in isolation!
Rahm fired rounds of 69, 65 and 64. His 18-under total matched the event’s 54-hole record low score. His nearest competitors were Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantley at 12-under. The American pair now share the joint lead going into Sunday’s final round.
The Spaniard was following the PGA Tour’s COVID Health & Safety Plan, which includes daily testing, after he was in close contact with a person with COVID on May 31. Rahm tested negative every day before he returned a positive result from his test taken prior to round three on Saturday. The sample was retested and confirmed positive. He was advised by the PGA Tour Saturday evening and required to withdraw from the event as per Tour protocols.
From the 50 tournaments played since the PGA Tour’s return to golf one year ago, Rahm is the fourth golfer to provide a positive test for COVID during competition on the PGA Tour.
Rahm was in search of his sixth PGA Tour title and looking to join Tiger Woods as the only golfers to go back-to-back at Jack’s Place at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
Earlier in the day, Rahm completed the final five holes of his second round, which he was unable to finish on Friday due to rain delays. He fired a Hole-In-One at the par 3, 16th hole and made a birdie at the 17th hole to sign for a second round 7-under 65. He then carded nine birdies in the afternoon for a superb 8-under 64. Rahm was 10-under from his 23 holes on Saturday.
