Reed Wins Farmers. Scott Top 10.
Patrick Reed scored a comfortable five-shot victory at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. It was his ninth PGA Tour title, his fourth consecutive season with a win and his largest margin of victory.
The resilient 30-year-old, who missed the cut last week, posted a final round 4-under 68 at Torrey Pines to reach 14-under. It was the fifth time from seven chances Reed converted a win after holding the 54-hole lead.
Reed started the tournament in a flurry firing a bogey-free 7-under on Thursday. He became the first opening round leader to go on and win the event since George Burns in 1987. The 2018 Masters champion joined Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson to stage wins at Augusta National, a WGC event and the Farmers Insurance Open.
Norway’s Viktor Hovland found himself one shot back from Reed early on the back nine after carding four birdies on the outward side. However, the 23-year-old fell out of contention with three bogeys over the final five holes.
Hovland finished in a tie for second place at 9-under with Sweden’s Henrik Norlander and Americans Ryan Palmer, Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau.
Finau has recorded the most Top 5s without a win on the PGA Tour since 2015/16 with 19 top 5 results from 104 starts. Schauffele led the field in scrambling with 18 saves from 23 attempts.
Adam Scott finished in a tie for 10th place to be the best placed Australian at 7-under.
Defending champion Marc Leishman produced a final round 2-under 70 to get to 5-under and finish in a tie for 18th place.
Former world No. 1 Brooks Koepka missed the cut. It is the first time in his PGA Tour career he has not made the weekend in three consecutive starts.
With his win, Reed is projected to jump to 10th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
