Ryu Takes FM Championship In A Playoff

Haeran Ryu overcame fellow Korean Jin Young Ko at the first playoff hole to win the FM Championship at TPC Boston. It was her second LPGA Tour victory after winning the NW Arkansas Championship last year in her rookie LPGA season. Ryu also owns five wins on the Korean Tour.

Ryu held a six-shot lead heading into the weekend after posting a career-best 10-under 62 on Friday. That lead evaporated early on Saturday after Ryu made two double-bogeys and one bogey during her opening six holes. The 23-year-old carded a disappointing 6-over 78 to then trail Ko by four shots moving into the final round.

Both Ryu and Ko began Sunday on fire covering the opening four holes in 4-under. Ryu made four straight birdies. While, Ko posted two eagles and two pars. From there, Ryu added five birdies and just one bogey to produce a sizzling 8-under 64 final round. Ko remained at 4-under for her round signing for a 4-under 68. Both players finished regulation play at 15-under, one-shot clear of China’s Ruixin Liu.

Liu made a run at the title early in her final round. The 25-year-old began Sunday with seven consecutive birdies to go out in just 29 shots. Liu signed for a final round 8-under 64 to get to 14-under and claim solo third place. It was her best finish for this LPGA Tour season.

America’s Allisen Corpuz and Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul shared fourth place at 13-under. Both players produced a round of 5-under 67 on the final day.

Hannah Green was the best-placed Australian. The 27-year-old from Perth posted a bogey-free 5-under 67 on Sunday to get to 9-under for a share of 10th place. Green made a hot start to her final round opening up with birdie, eagle, birdie at the first three holes. The major champion has recorded two victories and one runner up performance on the LPGA Tour this season.

The LPGA Tour will take a recess for the staging of the Solheim Cup on US soil at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia. Team Europe are the defending champions.
