Scheffler Outlasts Kim To Win Travelers Championship
Scottie Scheffler triumphed over Tom Kim at the first playoff hole to clinch the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. This victory marked Scheffler’s sixth PGA TOUR win of the year. The 28-year-old is the first golfer since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to secure six PGA TOUR titles in a single year before July 1.
Starting the final round one shot behind 54-hole leader Kim, the two-time Masters champion delivered a flawless 5-under 65, highlighted by three consecutive birdies on the 13th, 14th, and 15th holes. The world No. 1 completed his rounds with scores of 65, 64, 64, and 65, finishing at 22-under.
Kim forced a playoff with a clutch birdie from 10 feet on the 72nd hole, matching Scheffler at 22-under. The 22-year-old aimed to become the youngest player to achieve four PGA TOUR victories. Returning to the 18th hole, Scheffler secured the win with a solid par, earning his 12th PGA TOUR victory.
American Tom Hoge made a remarkable surge on Sunday with an 8-under 62, achieving a T3 finish and his best result of the season. Korea’s Sungjae Im recorded a 4-under 66 in the final round, joining Hoge in third place at 20-under.
Patrick Cantlay (65), Tony Finau (66), Justin Thomas (66), and Akshay Bhatia (69) shared fifth place at 18-under.
Cameron Young shot the 13th sub-60 score on the PGA TOUR with an impressive 11-under 59 on Saturday. His bogey-free round included two eagles and seven birdies. Despite this, Young’s 59 did not break the course record at TPC River Highlands, as Jim Furyk set the record with a 58 in the final round of the 2016 Travelers. Young ended the tournament tied for ninth place at 17-under.
Adam Scott was the highest-placed Australian, finishing T39 after an impressive 6-under 64 on Sunday.
The PGA TOUR moves to Michigan for next week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic to be staged at Detroit Golf Club. America’s Rickie Fowler is the defending champion.
