Scheffler Wins TOUR Championship To Cap Off Remarkable Year
Scottie Scheffler earned the biggest prize in golf after winning the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Georgia. The 28-year-old American produced a four-shot victory over compatriot Collin Morikawa to claim the FedExCup and its massive US$25 million prize. That incredible end-of-year bump in prizemoney pushed Scheffler’s season earnings with bonuses to more than US$62 million.
Scheffler’s win at the newly-restored East Lake layout gave the world No. 1 his seventh PGA TOUR win for the season. He also won the Olympic gold medal in Paris. It was the most successful year on the PGA TOUR since Tiger Woods won eight times in 2006.
Scheffler began the final round with a five-shot over lead compatriot Morikawa. The margin was just two shots after eight holes before Scheffler moved into top gear recording three birdies and one eagle to cover the final 10 holes in five under. Scheffler signed for a 4-under 67 on Sunday to reach 30-under.
Morikawa produced a stunning 5-under 66 to stake outright second place and bank US$12.5 million. It was Morikawa’s seventh top 5 finish on the PGA TOUR this season during a winless year.
America’s Sahith Theegala took solo third place at 24-under. The 26-year-old carded a stunning 7-under 64 on Sunday. The Californian scored 13-under over the final 26 holes. Theegala called a penalty on himself at the third hole on Saturday when he believed he moved some sand in a bunker during his backswing. The penalty resulted in a double-bogey.
Australia’s Adam Scott was joined by Americans Russell Henley and Xander Schauffele in a tie for fourth place at 19-under. Scott fired all four rounds in the 60s including his 4-under 67 on Sunday. Schauffele, who captured two major championship this season, posted a 3-under 68 final round. Henley fired an incredible 9-under 62 that featured a chip-in for an eagle at the final hole to set the new course record at the restored East Lake Golf Club.
The new season of the PGA TOUR will kick off with the Procore Championship to be staged at Silverado Resort in California. America’s Sahith Theegala is the defending champion.
