Finau Outlasts Rahm To Win Mexico Open
Tony Finau went bogey-free on Sunday to win the Mexico Open at Vidanta by three shots over Jon Rahm. Finau reversed the result at this event 12 months ago when he finished runner up to Rahm.
Finau, aged 33, fired a 5-under 66 final round to reach 24-under. The popular American now owns six PGA Tour titles. Finau took a two-shot lead into Sunday after posting rounds of 65, 64 and 65. The world No. 16 began his final round with a birdie at the opening hole. Finau went on to add birdies the 5th and 7th holes to cover the front nine in 3-under 32. He closed out the win with two unanswered birdies on the back nine at the 11th and 14th holes. Finau, who won the Houston Open in November, is the fourth multiple winner on the PGA Tour this season joining Rahm, Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler. Finau boasts five victories at his last 41 PGA Tour starts.
Rahm was looking to successfully defend one of his 11 titles on the PGA Tour for the first time. The world No. 1 managed a 4-under 67 to reach 21-under and claim solo second place. The Spaniard bolted into contention after a superb 61 in the third round. The flawless round tied his career-low score on the PGA Tour. It also broke the course record at Vidanta Vallarta. Rahm went out in 6-under 29—it was the first time he broke 30 on the front nine on the PGA Tour.
Brandon Wu, who finished joint runner up to Rahm at this event a year ago, took outright third place at 19-under after a final round 3-under 68.
Tour veterans Geoff Ogilvy and Aaron Baddeley were the best placed Australians. The Victorians each signed for a final round 1-under 70 to get to 7-under for a tie in 39th place.
The PGA Tour moves to North Carolina for next week’s Wells Fargo Championship staged at Quail Hollow Club. America’s Max Homa is the defending champion.
