Wood Earns Vic PGA Title
Queensland’s Christopher Wood collected his maiden PGA Tour of Australasia title at the Victorian PGA Championship at Moonah Links Resort. The 30-year-old scored a narrow one-shot victory over Michael Sim and New Zealand’s James Antiss.
Wood, who turned professional in 2012, began the final round three shots adrift of third round leader Anstiss. Anstiss took the lead into Sunday after firing a sensational 9-under 63 on moving day. Wood got off to a hot start with birdies at the first and third holes. He faced a setback with a bogey at the fourth but steadied with birdies at the seventh and eighth holes for an outward score of 3-under 33 and a share of the lead with Anstiss and New South Welshman Blake Windred. Sim was one shot behind the leaders as the players made the turn.
It was a dramatic ending over the closing holes of the Peter Thomson designed Open Course. All four players held a share of the lead with three holes to play. Wood took the outright lead with a superb birdie at the 71st hole. He recorded another birdie at the final hole for a final round 5-under 67 to reach 20-under for the event. Anstiss (71) and Sim (69) also birdied the final hole to remain one shot back and share second place. Windred returned a final round 71 to finish in outright fourth place.
The PGA Tour of Australasia stays at Moonah Links for the Moonah Classic starting on Tuesday.
