Sweep Away Fairway Wood Troubles
Playing a shot with a fairway wood from the turf can be intimidating. To brush off your fears, here are two simple takeaway drills that will help you clean up your fairway wood game.
Fairway woods are designed to sweep the ball off the ground.
Key points
- In your stance, play the ball closer to the instep of your lead foot.
- Set up with the the shaft nearly vertical to the ground.
- Allow your hands to hang directly under your chin.
- Make a U-shaped swing using a sweeping action through impact.
- Maintain a relaxed tempo.
DRILL 1...BRUSH BALL TWO
Place a second ball on the ground directly behind the first, just outside your back foot. Swing the club back slowly, rolling the second ball gently out of the way with the back of your clubhead.
This drill promotes a wider swing arc with less lifting for a sweeping U-shaped swing.
DRILL 2...TAKEAWAY ARC
Place a second ball on the ground directly behind the first, just outside your back foot. Swing the club back slowly, rolling the second ball gently out of the way with the back of your clubhead.
This drill promotes a wider swing arc with less lifting for a sweeping U-shaped swing.
